Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) know that the demand for council housing in Newcastle has been rising for a while.
YHN has been working hard to meet rising demand for council housing in Newcastle, and residents have already seen some impressive new build developments across the city. In 2008 YHN set up Leazes Homes, a new charitable subsidiary, to help access funding for new build. Eventually Leazes Homes will own many of the properties.
YHN is already managing 33 high spec two-bed bungalows which have proved popular with older tenants. The new developments have played an important role in providing high quality, accessible housing for older residents as well as making a number of much needed family homes available.
There are a number of sites currently under development and several sites planned for the future.

Everyone needs good neighbours and we’d like you to tell us about yours.
Your Homes Newcastle is proud to be working in partnership with the Evening Chronicle to promote the Good Neighbour Awards. The awards recognise and reward the contribution that great neighbours make to communities. They are your chance to pay tribute to someone special, whose kindness has made a real difference.
This is the third time we’ve sponsored the Good Neighbour Awards and this year we have just one category – Good Neighbour of the Year. Anyone living in the North East is eligible to nominate – you don’t have to be a YHN tenant.
The winner of the Good Neighbour of the Year award will take home £500 and a handcrafted trophy at a ceremony hosted by a local celebrity. Nomination forms are available in YHN housing offices and through the YHN website at www.yhn.org.uk
If you know someone who fits the bill, nominate them! The closing date for nominations is 22 August 2010. For more information call us on 0191 278 8633.
Last year we received so many inspirational, deserving nominations our judges had an unenviable task in deciding on a winner.
Jim Hall was named North East Neighbour of the Year after being nominated by his neighbour Alan Vout. Alan was especially grateful for the support offered by Jim when he lost his beloved wife, Alice, in 2008.
“Jim gave me his mobile number and told me I could call him any time, day or night”, said Alan.
Alan added, “My house is really far too big for one person but I’m reluctant to move because of my wonderful neighbours. No one could have better neighbours than I.”
Jim and his wife Elaine think of Alan as part of the family. Modest Jim said, “It was such a surprise to be nominated; actually winning came completely out of the blue. I just felt like I’d done what anyone would do for their neighbour”.
