Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has launched a new fire safety campaign aimed at older people. The theme is ‘it takes years to build up memories – and just seconds for them to go up in flames.’ The fire and rescue service staff, in uniform and carrying photographic ID badges, are currently visiting people over 60 in Newcastle offering home safety checks and fitting free smoke alarms where necessary.

The Great "Big Lunch" at Iris Brickfield Park, Heaton
Sunday 18 July, 12 noon - 2pm
Come and join in our Big Lunch - an initiative of the Eden Project in Cornwall - on Sunday 18 July, which is fast-becoming the UK's national day of street parties! Quite simply, it's about getting to know each other and building up our community spirit!
Friends of Iris Brickfield Park are inviting all Heaton residents to come out from behind their doors, eat lunch together in the Park and get to know one another. Bring picnic-style food and drink at 12 noon prompt for the shared buffet - maybe something that you have grown in your garden or allotment or even your Great Aunt Delia's never-known-to-fail fruit scones! (Remember - there are no fridges/chillers so think about what you are bringing and use a coolbox if possible - don't want food poisoning to ruin a great day! For food safety reasons, any leftover food will go to a local homeless charity around 1.45pm so it can be refrigerated for their service users later in the day).
Games and "do-it-ourselves" entertainment from 2pm so feel free to bring your hula hoops, skipping ropes, garden games and musical instruments! I'm sure you get the picture....we might even have a street tug'o'war!
Bring a picnic blanket and feel free to enjoy the Park - we'll have a marquee with tables and chairs so less abled people don't have to sit on the grass - talking of which, why not bring along an elderly neighbour who might need a bit of encouragement to come along? They might have some great memories of the street parties of their youth!
Finally, volunteers would be very welcome - perhaps to help on the day itself (e.g. welcomers, singing coaches, musicians, dancers etc) or in advance of the day (making bunting and table decorations, leafleting, bakers, artists etc).
Local community groups and evening classes are welcome to bring a stand to promote their activities - just get in touch to arrange.
Check out our Big Lunch event on Facebook
Any questions, phone Friends of Iris Brickfield on 0191 265 0514 or visit www.biglunch.com and pop in your postcode!

New Climate Change Strategy for South Heaton
We are the first ward in the city to try and look at this global environmental challenge at a local level. We will be working with local residents and community groups to try and make it a success.
We have used lots of local people's ideas already to draw it together - and we have already planned in extra awareness raising and Warmzone door knocking in the ward in the coming weeks as part of what we are doing to tackle climate change by getting more insulation into people's homes. This work is both about tackling fuel poverty and getting the benefits for the environment of reducing household energy use, showing the social and environmental benefits of what we are doing with this strategy.
Local people’s ideas have already been listened to and form the basis of what's in the document. We have also identified a local climate change community champion, who we will try and get more involved in the detail of this work alongside your local councillors. We'd like to hear any further ideas or issues you think we should listen to so we can include them as part of the work we are hoping to do on climate change in the area.
To give us your comments or request a copy of the strategy please e-mail henri.murison@newcastle.gov.uk or download a copy of the strategy here (pdf, 114Kb).

Iris Brickfield Needs You
We want to work with residents to improve Iris Brickfield Park. We want to improve the park equipment, the green space and pond. Iris Brickfield is home to lots of wildlife and is enjoyed by many residents. We want it to be enjoyed by many more. If you are interested in getting involved in some way, no matter how small, we are really keen to hear your ideas. Contact Stephen Green on 278 3007.
Neighbourhood Services, one of the council's departments, is responsible for dealing with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of the local environment. The manager for South Heaton ward is Stephen Green.
The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams, whose job it is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff who sweep the streets, pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small s cale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs. They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drains, potholes and fly-tipping.
The Neighbourhood Response Managers make sure these teams are doing the jobs that are a priority for the local community. They work with local councillors, ward co-ordinators, tenants' and residents' groups and local people to find out what their priorities are. They work closely with other Neighbourhood Services teams i n the area such as grounds maintenance, and road and pavement work.
If you want to contact your Neighbourhood Response Manager you can contact them directly, e-mail them or go along to a ward committee meeting.
If you want to report environmental problems, such as overhanging trees or graffiti, or ask for a bulky rubbish collection, you should contact Envirocall.
Our streetlights are maintained by a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) project.
We work with the police on removing abandoned vehicles.
