Northumbria Police invites residents of Benwell and Elswick to take part in an online forum
Tuesday March 30 between 7 and 9pm.
Residents in Benwell and Elswick are invited to have their say on crime from the comfort of their home as Northumbria Police launches a series of virtual meetings. Benwell and Elswick Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Hails will log on to speak directly to local residents about crime and disorder in the sector. Residents across the area are being urged to log on to join InspectorHails in a two-hour web chat. The meeting gives residents the chance to raise any concerns they may have about crime in their neighbourhood and ask questions. Inspector Hails will be able to directly reassure them about ongoing initiatives, policing in their neighbourhood, the good crime figures for the area and to offer relevant crime prevention advice.

Health Trainers – making healthy choices easier
HealthWorks Newcastle have a team of Community Health Trainers who can help you to make better health choices. They can provide people with information about local services, community groups and projects. They can support people to stop smoking, reduce stress and anxiety, get fit and make friends and make healthy and safe relationship choices. Fusion is a two-year, City Council-led scheme that aims to increase participation in physical activity amongst children, young people and family groups across Newcastle. The scheme offers free activities at council managed leisure centres and pools and at partner organisations.

West End Customer Service Centre and Library
The West End Customer Service Centre and Library in Condercum Road offers a range of services all under one roof. This newly built centre brings together a Customer Service Centre, Library and Your Homes Newcastle office. To find out more about the centre follow this link.
Care Homes Project needs volunteers to act as friends and mentors to care home residents. We provide full support and training and pay out-of-pocket expenses. You will be working alongside older people to provide a listening ear and to help them to be physically and mentally active. There will be involvement in local community activities such as dancing, film and drama groups, local history classes, reminiscence sessions, arts and crafts, etc. This is an exciting opportunity to meet new people and take part in new things. Families First
Families First is a family support project which works with families where there is a child aged 0-11. The project operates in the West End of Newcastle and is funded through the local Primary Care Trust and Sure Start Children Centre. Referrals are made directly to the project or for 0-5's they can be made to the Children's Centre. Every Tuesday there is an allocations panel meeting at the Children's Centre. Referrals can be made from a wide range of professionals, and families can also self refer. Services provided include:

North Benwell Neighbourhood Management Initiative
This Initiative delivers service improvements at a local level through working in partnership. It brings together a wide range of service providers, local residents and other local stakeholders. It is funded primarily by Bridging Newcastle Gateshead and is a partnership between Home Housing, Newcastle City Council, and Northumbria Police. The overall aim is to improve services in the area, improve the physical fabric and to build an equal and effective partnership between residents and service providers.

Record of the Past

Westgate PAST is now an established Local Heritage Initiative for the collection of oral history, photographs and artefacts in order to record the change that is taking place in the West End of Newcastle from days gone by to the present day. Excelsior Academy – Find Out More
Information about the Excelsior Academy is now available online at www.excelsiornewcastle.org.uk. The website includes a wide range of information about the new school which will be for local children aged 11-18 living in the West End. Neighbourhood Services, one of the council's departments, is responsible for dealing with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of the local environment. The manager for Elswick ward is David Orr.
The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams, whose job it is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff who sweep the streets, pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small scale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs. They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drains, potholes and fly-tipping.
The Neighbourhood Response Managers make sure these teams are doing the jobs that are a priority for the local community. They work with local councillors, ward co-ordinators, tenants' and residents' groups and local people to find out what their priorities are. They work closely with other Neighbourhood Services teams in the area such as grounds maintenance, and road and pavement work.

Our streetlights are maintained by a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) project.
We work with the police on removing abandoned vehicles.
Your ward committee is made up of three local councillors. Its purpose is to identify and address local issues. The committee consults and works with local residents and businesses, agencies and voluntary and community sector organisations.
The Ward Committee meets at least once every two months and is open to all members of the public. The dates for meetings are:

The Ward Co-ordinator organises and publicises Ward Committee meetings and deals with any issues raised. They can help you with transport to and from the meeting, childcare and information in a range of community languages.&n bsp;

Grant Aid
The Ward Committee has a budget which community and voluntary sector groups can apply for by completing a grant aid application form.
