Summer Play Schemes in Gosforth

Packed lunch and play clothes required!
Activities include: Arts and crafts, modelling, team challenges, sports, den building, games, adventurous activities, music, dance, freely chosen play and then some. All staff are experienced and qualified and hold current Enhanced CRB Disclosures, First Aid Certificates and have completed relevant Safeguarding Children Training.
Please note that the sessions are operated on a first-come, first-served basis.
All activities and premises are risk assessed against strict council procedures and policies.
All activities are free and are run by Newcastle Play Service with funding from the Big Lottery and East Gosforth, West Gosforth and Parklands Ward Committees.

Active Push - An exercise session for mums wanting to get back into shape after having a baby
Wednsdays 10-11am - Heaton Park, meet at the pavillion
Tuesdays 11am-12noon - Gosforth Park, meet at gates next to post office
£1.50 per session. First session is free.
Each exercise consists of power walking and resistance exercises to tone those troublesome areas. No childcare needed - bring your baby in your buggy.

Home Safety Checks
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is committed to achieving it's Vision of 'Creating the Safest Community' by reducing the risk of fire in domestic premises through Home Safety Checks. Firefighters can visit your home, where you may be at the greatest risk from fire, and offer simple advice on Fire Safety, tailored specifically to your needs. We can also, where necessary, fit free smoke detectors and in certain cases provide a deep fat fryer to replace a conventional chip pan. We are currently targeting our resources those households most at risk, but will attend to you as soon as possible if you request this service. James Malia is a Customer Co-ordinator from Newcastle Futures and is working in partnership with the Gosforth Customer Service Centre to help local residents with training and employment advice. If you are actively looking for work, James will be able to help you get started. This confidential and voluntary service is there to help you when you need it and will be tailored to your requirements. This can range from advice and guidance to potential financial assistance to help bridge the gap from benefits to employment.

Udecide - participatory Budgeting in Newcastle
Udecide gives people in Newcastle the power to decide how a pot of money should be spent so it can make the biggest difference. Udecide projects happen in different parts of the city with different groups of people and projects are based on a theme. At the moment residents are being invited to help decide how to spend £50,000+ to improve the quality of life for Newcastle Carers.

Need advice on benefits? We could help
If you feel you’re having to tighten your belt and money isn’t going as far as it used to, our new ‘Income Generator’ team might be able to help. We have joined up two parts of the council – the Benefits Section and Welfare Rights – to create recession-busting help for anyone in the city. The Income Generators attend Trinity Centre, Gosforth High Street every Thursday morning 10 to 12. They can help you by looking at what benefits you may not even realise you’re entitled to which could save you pounds on council tax, rent or other areas of your budget. Women's Running Group (Beginners) - Gosforth Central Park
A running session for women who want to exercise in a fun and safe environment regardless of age or ability.

Volunteer for the Youth Offender Panel
Volunteers are needed to join youth offender panels in Newcastle. If you become a panel member you will be joining the thousands of volunteers who are already seeing their efforts pay off to tackle crime in their area.
You can do it
Being a panel member is a challenging yet rewarding role. If you want to see less crime in your community, this is the perfect opportunity to get actively involved. It makes no difference where you come from or what you do, as long you are over 18 years old and are willing to make a difference in your community. Health Trainers – making healthy choices easier
HealthWorks Newcastle have a team of Community Health Trainers who can help you to make better health choices. They can provide people with information about local services, community groups and projects. They can support people to stop smoking, reduce stress and anxiety, get fit and make friends and make healthy and safe relationship choices. Community Health Trainers work with individuals and groups. If you would like their support phone 273 8889.
Gosforth Central Bowling Club is located in the award winning Gosforth Central Park. The club is keen to introduce new members to this activity and invites anyone interested to contact them for a tour and try-out.

Gosforth Central Park User Group

Fusion is a two-year, City Council-led scheme that aims to increase participation in physical activity amongst children, young people and family groups across Newcastle. The scheme offers free activities at council managed leisure centres and pools and at partner organisations.

Local council services
Neighbourhood Services, one of the council's departments, is responsible for dealing with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of the local environment. The manager for East Gosforth ward is Darren Penaluna.
The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams, whose job it is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff who sweep the streets, pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small scale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs. They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drains, potholes and fly-tipping.
The Neighbourhood Response Managers make sure these teams are doing the jobs that are a priority for the local community. They work with local c ouncillors, ward co-ordinators, tenants' and residents' groups and local people to find out what their priorities are. They work closely with other Neighbourhood Services teams in the area such as grounds maintenance, and road and pavement work.

Reporting problems
If you want to report environmental problems, such as overhanging trees or graffiti, or ask for a bulky rubbish collection, you should contact Envirocall.
Our streetlights are maintained by a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) project.
We work with the police on re mo ving abandoned vehicles.
Your ward committee and getting involved
Ward Committees
Your ward is made up of the three local councillors. Its purpose is to identify and address local issues. The committee consults and works with local residents and businesses, agencies and voluntary and community sector organisations.
The Ward Committee meets at least once every two months and is open to all members of the public.
All meetings are held at St Nicholas Church Hall Annexe, Wardle Street, off Station Road, South Gosforth, NE3 1AN.
There will be an informal drop in from 6.30-7pm to enable residents to raise general items of local concern with East Gosforth Councillors, Northumbria Police neighbourhood Policing Team, and the Neighbourhood Response Manager. The dates for meetings are:

The Ward Co-ordinator organises and publicises Ward Committee meetings and deals with any issues raised. They can help you with transport to and from the meeting, childcare and information in a range of community languages.

Grant Aid
The Ward Committee has a budget which community and voluntary sector groups can apply for by completing a grant aid application form. Community Groups
South Gosforth Residents Association
Meets at the Brandling Villa Hotel, Haddricks Mill Road the last Thurs day of each month at 7pm. The aim of the group is to promote the benefit of the residents of South Gosforth by the enhancement of the local environment. Email: chair@southgosforth.org

High West Jesmond Residents Association
HWJRA members meet bi-monthly on Wednesday evenings in the Ouseburn Room at the Trinity Centre on Gosforth High Street. Membership fees are £5.00 per annum per household in return for which member s have voting rights at the AGM, receive minutes of meetings and a copy of the quarterly newsle tter.
All residen ts are kept informed on key issues which may affect the community as a whole via the notice board on Newlands Road.
The broad aims of the association are to maintain and improve the quality of life and preserve the character of the area. A further aim is to protect and enhance our green spaces and the environment generally. Finally, we exist to support all our residents in dealings with the statutory authorities and to represent residents where inappropriate development is being proposed.

Gosforth Garden Village As so ciation
The association promotes the benefit of residents of Garden V illage Estate by working to improve their quality of life, preserve the character of the area and ensure that development does not adversely affect the local environment. The association also assists residents in exercising their rights as members of the community including empowering them in dealing with statutory and other relevant authorities whether as individuals or members of the association. The association operates a community centre located at Rosewood Avenue which hosts a range of activities including bowls, tennis, W.I., line danc ing and children's activities.
