Westerhope ward is located in the Outer West of the City and covers the area of:
The ward has a very active community sector with many community groups made up of volunteers. Many of the groups meet together as the Westerhope Community Partnership aiming to represent the views of the community to the City Council and outside agencies.
In the ward, tenants of Your Homes Newcastle have access to West Denton and Newbiggin Hall Community Housing Offices. These offices provide and support a variety of functions and services including rent enquiries and the reporting and monitoring of repairs.
It has a number of schools providing educational services to a range of ages, including Knoplaw Primary, Milecastle Primary, and Westerhope Primary schools.
Close to the ward the recently refurbished Outer West Pool (formerly Denton Park Pool) offers swimming facilities and a hi-tech fitness room. The pool also houses the Outer West Customer Services Centre which offers a place where residents can get service information and advice from one central point. The range of services offered is wide; examples are Cashier’s payments, electoral registration, planning services and social services, though these are only a small proportion. The centre has a range of facilities to ensure accessibility such as an interpreting service, easy access and equipment for customers with hearing difficulties.
The centre also provides extensive library services, including computers with free internet access, a children’s library, music Cd's and black and white photocopying facilities. In addition, the Denton Burn Library is close to the Westerhope ward and offers all the same facilities.
In 2005 work was carried out on Stamfordham Road to improve road safety and environmental appearance giving back to residents the feeling of Westerhope as a ‘village’. The ward has many public open spaces. Westerhope Community Recreational Ground has play areas for children, and Westerhope Community Association on Hillhead Road has a bowling green, an artificial 5-a-side pitch and public football pitches. It also acts as a meeting place for various groups and which hold a wide variety of activities.
The Westerhope ward boundary starts at the corner of Glantlees and Stamfordham Road. It heads northwest along Stamfordham Road past the St Johns Estate. Here the boundary turns south down the track which joins the North Walbottle Wagon Way footpath and then turns east to the rear of the properties on Cayton Grove. The boundary heads northwest, excluding Clifton Walk, until it reaches Hillhead Parkway. At Hillhead Parkway it continues east to the south of Knoplaw and Milecastle Primary Schools then south to include the clinic and the Church. The boundary continues east until it reaches Hillhead Road where it heads north to the reservoir. At the reservoir the boundary heads east to the north of All Saints College where it follows the cycle track north to West Avenue and continues east. The boundary turns south then north to include some properties on Greenfield Avenue until reaching Stamfordham Road, continuing east until reaching the starting point.
